About this activity
The capital of Laos is the locale for great little boutiques and shopping discoveries - but you won’t know where to go without 'insider' knowledge. This 'menu' style tour has been crafted by our resident Lao expatriate, and reveals the best places to shop for textiles, carvings, metalware and more.
Prior to departing, your guide will meet you at your hotel at 8.30 am and talk you through the various options to ensure you make the most of your day. Decide what you want to see, based on your own interests and preferences. Opening hours at many of the below are variable (and many shops are not open on Sunday), so please be prepared to be a little flexible with your visit selections.
Options include:
A workshop and boutique is devoted to the promotion Lao weaving traditions, and textile production. The textiles on sale are very high quality (and are priced accordingly) and are hand-made using traditional weaving methods.
A boutique stocking beautifully crafted woodware using woods indigenous to Laos. Kitchen bowls, cups, trays, platters – some with metal inlays – are crafted to exacting standards by local Lao people and are on display at this small boutique.
A venue for a good range of affordable Lao textile products, made with an eye to quality. Scarves, spreads, bags and clothing are made in softer colour tones, from locally-grown silk, cotton and bamboo. Also stocks metalware made from re-cycled bomb metal.
A Fair Trade social enterprise which stocks handmade products, including silks from Xieng Khuang Province, soaps, bath and body products, and herbal teas. Natural dyes are used in the colouring of all textiles stocked.
Basket shops off Khouvieng Road - For a good range of locally made rattan cane baskets, of various sizes and designs.
A small shop which stocks homewares, ceramics, tableware, leather goods, and French-designed trowsers (a modern take on fisherman's pants).
The best bookshop in Vientiane, which is good for postcards, vitage prints and maps, books on textiles, the range of 'Anak-ijo' modern retro design posters ... and books (on Laos, Southeast Asia, and novels).
A social enterprise outlet which stocks hand-woven textiles in cotton and silk, fashion bags, homewares, clay pots, decorative items, paper products, teas, honey, whiskey, and locally-made skin products and soaps.
A smart boutique stocking a good range of clothing made from handwoven silk and dyed using natural materials.
A shop stocking handmade woodwares, gorgeous soaps, oils, and natural body products, as well as coconut-shell jewelry and prints. Natural skincare products are also stocked here.
An outlet which sells furniture and timber homewares designed and made in Vientiane, contemporary jewellery designed in Vientiane, and a range of vintage and clothes sourced from around the world.
