The Aranui Cave is the smallest out of Waitomo’s three main caves; it is also the most delicate meaning that you have the chance to see the stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones and other limestone formations up close. It got its name from Ruruku Aranui, who was a local Maori that first discovered the cave over 100 years ago. Along your tour you’ll also learn about the role this cave plays in Maori legend and myths. Being a dry cave, there are very few signs of life inside the cave. However, wetas dwell at the entrance, these are distinct insects only found in New Zealand and have existed since the dinosaur age! There is also lush life in the rainforest surrounding the cave where you’ll have to chance to have a quick tour of with your guide.
