Lakeland Poets: Wordsworth and his circle at Dove Cottage, Grasmere and Rydal Mount - Full Day All-inclusive Tour

Full Day
About this activity
The day starts with a
scenic drive to your first location, the medieval village of Hawkshead. The journey there takes you along narrow, winding woodland roads through undulating fields filled with Herdwick sheep and rocky outcrops. Relax and admire the picturesque farms, barns and houses made from local Lakeland slate and stone. Moving on through this sublime countryside, you arrive at the first stop of the day in Hawkshead, "the prettiest village in the Lake District".
Your entrance to Hawkshead Grammar School is included in your tour. Here you will be able to see where Wordsworth was educated and the desk where he carved his signature as a boy. Your guide will also take you on a short guided walk around the village pointing out all of the places of interest and then you move on to the next stop at Grasmere.
Here you will see the Rectory where he lived for two years but where two of his children died; the school where he and Dorothy taught and which is now where the famous Grasmere Gingerbread is made; the former inn where he and Coleridge first stayed during their walking tour of 1799; his home of Allan Bank perched high on the hill over the village and the church, cradled in its sublime Lakeland setting where he chose as his last resting place rather than Westminster Abbey, the natural landscape he so loved, enveloping him body and soul for all eternity in this beautiful corner of the world.
Your guide will also take you on a short guided walk around the village pointing out all of the places of interest and then leave you to explore and enjoy the village in your own time. This is the designated lunch stop for today and there are plenty of good quality hotels and cafe's as well as a whole array of gift shops to browse.
After enjoying Grasmere Village, your tour now takes you to Dove Cottage, the home where Wordsworth with his sister Dorothy lived in from December 1799. Your entry in to Dove Cottage & The Wordsworth Museum are included in your tour. Your guide will leave you to explore the Cottage, Garden and Museum at your leisure.
Passing the glorious Grasmere and mirror-like Rydal Water, we take a short drive to Rydal Mount, your final destination. Your entrance to Rydal Mount & Garden are included in your tour. Wordsworth and his family lived here from May 1813. Sadly, it was at Rydal that his dearly loved daughter Dora died and where he drew his last breath on 23 April 1850 at the age of 82 after catching a chill while walking in nature.
Your guide will also take you on a short walk to Rydal Church where the family worshipped and to Dora's Field, planted with hundreds of daffodils which he dedicated to Dora after her death.
