About this activity
Get a look at the northern reaches of the Roman Empire with a visit to the ancient fortifications and frontier outposts that make up Hadrian's Wall. This tour shows you the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site as you learn stories and secrets of England's great wall.

Meet your guide on the roads of Windermere for the ride that takes you out of the Lake District and almost to the Scottish border. Follow the route of the 2nd-century wall that ran across the full width of Britain, guarding the Roman holdings in the island's southern half against incursions by the Celtic Britons in the north, as your guide explains how the island's division under Roman rule reverberated throughout its history.

Along the route, you can see unique sights such as the Lanercost Priory, a 13th-century church built partly with stones from the wall; Steel Rigg and the classic view of Crag Lough.

View the iconic lone tree that stands over the wall at Sycamore Gap. Visit the Roman Army Museum for a look at what life was like for the soldiers of the era, and then see the archaeological site of Vindolanda, an old Roman settlement that stands among the largest active excavations in Europe, before you return to Windermere.
