It was built by venerable Sultans in de second half of the 18th century as a representation of the Javanese cosmos. Nearby Taman Sari or 'Water Castle' reminds of the whims of these former feudal rulers. This was once a splendid retreat, the playground of mighty kings, a complex of basins, bathing houses, private chambers and watch towers from where kings could observe beautiful women bathing. Then a visit to an intriguing history belies the world famous Borobudur temple, one of the biggest and most impressive Buddhist monuments ever erected by mankind. The backdrop of the spectacular Menoreh mountain range enhances its peaceful image. To reach the top, the pilgrim had to climb nine terraces, of which some are decorated with narrative stone carvings, telling the lives and times of the Lord Buddha. The temple is a prayer in stone. It's a magnificent illustration of the will of man to preserve the past. Once enshrined by a wild jungle, it took more than ten years and great effort to restore the monument.
