About this activity
You will be picked up at 9.00am from your choice of location in York and head north for Captain Cook Country, skirting the North York Moors National Park with views of the imposing Cleveland Hills and hearing tales of the region's maritime past and Captain Cook's life on the way.

The first stop is in the village of Marton where you can stand on the site of the cottage where Captain Cook was born in 1728, which is now marked with a granite vase, then, if you are ready for refreshments, you can have a quick coffee in the nearby Cook's Cafe before heading for the village green to view the commemorative plaque mounted on a slab of granite from Point Hicks, the headland first sighted by Cook in the discovery of Australia. The tour then makes the short journey to Great Ayton, pausing to photograph Roseberry Topping, a boyhood haunt of James Cook.

You will arrive in the beautiful traditional English village of Great Ayton, perched on the banks of the River Leven, where James Cook lived through most of his childhood, to see his Schoolroom, the Church where he worshipped and his family are buried, his statue on the village green and the site of his cottage that was dismantled brick by brick and transported to Melbourne!

On leaving Great Ayton you will follow the route over the North York Moors that Cook walked to reach the small fishing village of Staithes for his first contact with the sea, passing by the Captain Cook Monument on Easby Moor.

The tour then follows the rugged coastline route to Whitby, stopping on the West Cliff overlooking the harbour to view and photograph the famous Whale Bones and Captain Cook Statue.

You will have about three hours in Whitby, with options to visit Whitby's newest attraction, The Endeavour Experience (one of only two full size replicas of the HM Bark Endeavour in existence), the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Whitby Abbey (inspiration for the Dracula books), experience the Bark Endeavour scale replica boat trip around the harbour, go shopping for some Whitby Jet or Gothic Fashion at the Market, or just explore the busy fishing port and sample Fish 'n' Chips from the famous Magpie Café - the choice is yours!

After Whitby you can just sit back and enjoy the views as the tour heads over the North York Moors back towards York, pausing for a final photo opportunity at the Hole of Horcum.

You should arrive back at the pick-up point by 6:00pm but should not book onward travel arrangements too soon after that in case of traffic problems.
