About this activity
The walls of York have a rich and bloodthirsty history stretching back nearly 2000 years. Whilst free to walk on, visitors can often leave the city having missed out on discovering the secrets of the walls, and the city they have protected for so long. These personalised tours provide a totally unique, bespoke and entertaining history of the walls and the city they have protected for so long. Each tour is designed just for you, so please get in touch with the local provider if you have any special interests or needs.
Refreshments can also be arranged along the way with some excellent coffee shops, pubs and restaurants to check out (own expense), and in addition will also tour other parts of the city too (Castle, Minster, Shambles etc) should you require. As local tour guides passionate about the city, they can also handle any restaurant bookings or just general advice about other things to do in York during your stay.
As these are bespoke tours, please contact the local provider as soon as you can in advance so your booking can be guaranteed and the guides have enough time to prepare the tour for your adequately.
Please note that the walls close at dusk, and some parts are occasionally closed if there are icy conditions. Whilst the walls are well designed for tourists, wheelchair access is limited however please contact the local provider if you require disabled access as alternative routes which walk beside the walls, not on them, can be arranged.
Should you require an evening tour, please contact the local provider to discuss your requirements, often the guides focus more on the other areas of York as well as the walls to provide a more atmospheric experience.

We had such a great time on this tour! John was a fantastic guide. He was funny and engaging and he taught us a lot about the long history of York. We really enjoyed having the chance to walk around the city and learn about some of the most highlighted places! Would highly recommend this tour!

If I could give this tour more stars, I would. This is well worth the money. Our guide, John, was very nice and he knew his stuff. He was able to bring the history of the area alive and as a resident, he knew how the past interacted with the present. His passion for the history came through in the conversation. We went on many tours in the UK and this was the best. He took us to the highlights and then the areas that other tours missed. If you want more than what the guidebooks say and are interested in the history of the area - don't miss this tour!!!
John was a fantastic story teller. Very informative and entertaining.
This tour was amazing! John's knowledge of archaeology and history make for a fascinating few hours. He had emailed me before I got there to ask about my interests, very nice touch. And he is a good guy to be around, friendly and pleasant. I was very lucky in that I was the only one on the tour that day, so got a tailor made private tour. I plan a trip back to York and will do this tour again.
This was a great experience with John our tour guide. We did the 2-hour tour. We were clearly going over time a little, but John told us not to worry about this. We had people in our party from 14 to 73 and John was able to keep us informed and entertained. We asked for a specific start and end location and this was accommodated exactly.
