Zagreb Small-Group Walking Tour
You will meet with your local guide in Zagreb city centre.
Your first sight is the Music Pavilion which has served as an open-air concert stage since the 19th century.
Guide will take you to the medieval Upper Town which consist of two medieval settlements that the city grew from – Kaptol and Gradec.
Your next stop will be in front of the Zagreb Cathedral.
After visiting Cathedral you will go to near market Dolac, a buzzing open food market known as ''belly of Zagreb''. There you can buy or taste fresh local products. It is very interesting to see and visit in the morning hours when it best reflects a local's daily life.
For just a couple of minutes walk you will arrive at Tkalča, a famous long pedestrian street where you can see lots of cafes and bars that offer you a great place to sit, drink coffee and watch people passing by.
Later you and your guide will arrive at Stone Gate – an archway, a sanctuary where candles always burn for Zagreb's patron saint, St. Mary of the Stone Gate. You can light a candle there and enjoy in mystique that this place provides.
In Upper Town you will also see the colorful Church of St. Mark which is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb and of its symbols.There you will also see Parliament with the Government Palace.
In the very nearness your guide will also show you building in which is now Croatian Naive Art Museum. The museum holdings consist of 1500 works of art - paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, mainly by Croatian but also by other well-known world artists.
You will then make a stop in front of St.Catherine's church which has survived two fires. The church was refurnished with help from wealthy Croatian nobles, and in return, they were allowed to display their family coat-of-arms or have the honor to be buried or entombed in the church.
After visiting the church of St.Catherine you will soak in the view of central Zagreb in the company of poet Antun Gustav Matoš whose statue sits on a bench beside Strossmayer Promenade while you are going on a walk through Upper Town.
From the Promenade you will make a stop at Lotršćak Tower. The name of the tower is derived from the name for the bell, campana latrunculorum – thieves’ bell, which rang in the evening to signal the closing of the town gates. An interesting fact in the history of the Lotrščak Tower is that when the town had no money for the repairs and maintenance, they would lease it to the citizens making the maintenance their obligation, and in case of enemy attacks, they would be required to give it back to the city for defense.
Your tour will end here, and if you want you can continue walking through the old streets of Upper Town, or you can take a ride at funicular that will take you back in the Lower Town. Your guide will be at your service if you have some question for him.
