About this activity
Visit: Acuario de Zaragoza, Avenida Jose Atares s / n Expo, 50018 Zaragoza Spain

The Fluvial Aquarium of Zaragoza is the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world. In its 60 fish tanks, you will find more than 1200 animals of more than 120 different species of fluvial fauna from the Nile, Mekong, Amazons, Murray-Darling and the Ebro rivers. The building has different bodies where the central space represents the glaciers that are the origin of all river. The large freshwater tank that crosses its interior from side to side symbolizes the primal water, the "Great River World". The volumes that make up the exhibition space are the diverse parts of the earth that, fertilized by the rivers, germinate in an exhibition of diversity.

At its sides are the quadrangular ships that house the exhibition spaces dedicated to the Nile, Mekong, Amazon, Murray-Darling and the Ebro rivers. Three of them (Nilo, Mekong, and Murray-Darling) limit their spatial development to a plant. The the other two occupy the two heights of the building. The whole is completed with a large area, in semi-basement, dedicated to technical services and water purification and conditioning systems for aquariums.

A moderately Large setup that may have been state-of-art once but feels dated, neglected and desolate now. Upkeep and maintenance is wanting probably due to low foot falls. Hardly any crowd when we went. Also the Tanks were not labeled at all or properly to identify the species within and at times were labeled incorrectly. The Large central tank was indeed very large but limited species. Go only if aquariums are your thing or if you haven't visited the better aquariums around the world.
