About this activity
The Santa Maria Volcano is located in the Quetzaltenango Department of Guatemala. It erupted on the 24 and 25 October 1902, when much of its south side was destroyed. The Santiaguito Volcano rests on the north side. The Volcano is 3772m tall and 7kms from the city of Quetzaltenango, via roads in good condition. We will start our ascent at the Llano del Pinal, where we will drive on a rocky path that some call Devil's Backbone, made of petrified lava. We will subsequently reach the side of a small mountain called Raljub in the K'iche' language. This is where the steep part begins to the cone of the volcano. From the top of the volcano, you can take in beautiful views of surrounding mountains and cities.
