About this activity
Get beneath the skin of Sicily’s 2nd city on a half-day private tour of Catania, and see all the famous sights and picturesque squares.
Start by visiting Piazza Stesicoro to see the remains of the 2nd-century Roman Amphitheatre. Continue along Via Etnea to Via dei Crociferi, and admire one of the most beautiful Baroque roads in Italy. Lined with churches and monasteries, Via dei Crociferi is closed at one end by the entrance to the Villa Cerami, now home to the Faculty of Law of Catania University.
Admire the L’Arco di San Benedetto (Arch of St. Benedict), and continue to the imposing Palazzo dell'Università, the main university building in Piazza Università. Marvel at the ornate façade of the Teatro Massimo in Piazza Vincenzo Bellini, named after the local-born composer.
Next, discover Catania’s symbolic “elephant” (“u liotru”) in Piazza Duomo, dominated by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini’s Sicilian Baroque cathedral. Experience a typical pescheria (fish market), before ending at the massive fortress of the Castello Ursino, now home to Catania’s civic museum.
