The University of Coimbra was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in Lisbon in 1290 and was definitely transferred to Coimbra in 1537.

In addition to the Joanina Library you will be able to discover within the university the Chapel of S. Miguel, Medieval and Academic Prison, Arms Room, Capelos Room, Private Exam Room and University Tower.

Penedo da Saudade is a park and viewpoint of the city of Coimbra, built in 1849, from where you can see the eastern part of the city up to the Mondego river, the Roxo mountain range and the Lousã mountain range.Connected to the Coimbrã culture and its academy, in this space you can find among diverse vegetation, numerous commemorative plaques of events linked to academic life, as well as student poetry. Quinta das Lágrimas occupies an area of 18.3 hectares around a 19th century palace reclaimed in our days as a luxury hotel. In its gardens accumulate memories since the fourteenth century, both in the built elements as in the trees, in the popular legends and in its own history. In the garden you can visit the so-called Fonte dos Amores and Fonte das Lágrimas, as they were the scene of the love of Prince Pedro (future Pedro I of Portugal) and the noble D. Inês de Castro.
