Ketchikan Shore Excursion: Off-Road Jeep and Canoe Safari

About this activity
While you’re in port, embrace Ketchikan’s natural beauty on this quintessential Alaskan tour on Revillagigedo Island (the same island on which Ketchikan is located). This combo tour allows you to enjoy the great outdoors in both a Jeep and canoe!

The driving portion of your adventure starts as you are grouped with three fellow travelers for your tour of the mountainous terrain of Tongass National Forest. Follow the route through the lush rainforest and up mountain roads to admire the spectacular scenery. Through the two-way radios, your group leader and guide will offer interesting and informative commentary as you drive. Be fascinated by the area’s natural history as you pass through old-growth and new-growth forests and pull-over for some fantastic. Along the way, stop to change drivers so that anyone who wants to get behind the wheel will have the opportunity.

Your Jeep adventure ends at Lake Harriet Hunt, where you’ll leave the Jeep behind for a quieter form of transport – a 37-foot (11-meter), 20-person canoe! Experience this unique Alaskan ecosystem as you paddle the large, Native American-style canoe across the lake with your guide. When you reach the other side of the lake, your expert guide will lead you on a nature hike through an old-growth forest.

During your nature walk, take a break, relax and enjoy your Alaskan snack at a remote camp in Tongass National Forest! Refuel with smoked salmon, clam chowder, fresh bread rolls with local wild-berry jam, hot chocolate, coffee and more. The tour ends with a short narrated transfer back to the cruise port.

Jeeps were in good condition and we really appreciated letting my husband and I have our own jeep as it we were not able to get into the back seat very easily. We did not see any bear during the nature walk but our guide was informative. We learned about native wildlife and plants during our nature walk and the canoe ride was fun! We had a little canoe race on the way back from the nature walk and the Nebraska canoe was victorious! GO BIG RED!!!

Overall this excursion was a lot of fun, but it was easy stuff. Dont get me wrong, it was 'off road' type driving on an old logging road up the side of a mountain. And then a bigger canoe-style row boat across the lake - just as described. No complaints there, just wish the Jeep part was longer! One road up and down the mountain with two stops to look out and take pictures. Supposedly the lead car with our guides saw a bear as we turned onto the old road, but that would be the only 'wildlife' seen. Rowing was easy, just wish the guide would have called out to row in unison... every inexperienced person smacking their paddles in the water and on each others oars was a little annoying. Snacks across the river were good - clam chowder, hot chocolate, coffee, bread, strawberry jam and goldfish crackers. It was a hot day so some water would have been good, but that's ok! Beautiful day on a beautiful lake in beautiful Alaska! I'd add a star if they'd add more off road time.

This a great excursion. We loved the canoe ride and the jeep ride was fun too. Oliver, our tour guide did a great job. The clam chowder and not chocolate was great. Could have used a little more time to enjoy it though.

The jeep ride was truly off-road. Only wish we could have viewed more wildlife. The canoe trip was excellent, the food tasty, and the nature walk very interesting.

Live the bantering between guides Kevin and Jansen, they make the trip fun! Canoe portion was OK nothing exciting. Self drive jeep drive up a rocky bumpy Tongas mountain was awesome!
