About this activity
This place is located between three impressive volcanoes, the Cerro Verde volcano that is a National Park, the active volcano of Santa Ana and slightly active Izalco’s volcano. The three volcanoes in such close proximity provide a fascinating lesson in volcanic development and aging. Rich vegetation and forest cover Cerro Verde, the oldest, while Izalco, the youngest, remains almost entirely composed of rough volcanic rock. Santa Ana lies in the middle, with both plant life and volcanic stone. Hiking the three volcanoes affords three very different and exhilarating experiences. ILAMATEPEC/ SANTA ANA VOLCANO Exciting adventure to the top of the Ilamatepec Volcano, a real scenic gem. It’s the highest and largest of the coastal mountain range. Reaches 2365 masl. Collapse of the volcano during the late Pleistocene or early Holocene produced a massive debris avalanche that swept into the Pacific, forming the Acajutla Peninsula. The path is narrow and difficult to traverse. There are a number of resting points. As you reach upper altitudes, the winds are much stronger and you will be enveloped in clouds. Soon, you will arrive at the top. The crater has an emeraldgreen lagoon in its interior. IZALCO VOLCANO/ THE LIGHT HOUSE OF THE PACIFIC Izalco Volcano, better known as "The Lighthouse of the Pacific." The youngest volcanoe in the American continent formed in the year 1770. Located in the department of Sonsonate, the Volcano of Izalco rises to a height of 1910 MASL. Its perfect cone is totally devoid of vegetation; the slopes have inclinations of up to 45 degrees, making it a serious challenge even for the most expert of mountain climbers. If you like the ecology and the extreme, this is your tour. The trip starts at the Cerro Verde National Park. Cerro Verde is an inactive volcano located at an altitude of 2035 masl and length of 500 hectares. It has a cloud forest in and around the crater with a temperature of between 12 and 18 degrees centigrade. COATEPEQUE LAKE Coatepeque is a volcanic lake situated about an hour from San Salvador. Named Lago de Coatepeque, it is on the eastern slope of the Santa Ana volcano. It is a beautiful, clean, and sparkling blue crater-shaped lake, 6 kms wide and 120 meters deep and surrounded by steep green slopes rising up 250 to 500 meters.
