About this activity
Your fully customizable private Bavarian Alps and Eagle's Nest tour will take you to the Bavarian Mountains, the location of Hitler's Eagle's Nest retreat, the Nazi bunkers around the mountain town of Berchtesgaden and the town itself.
The tour starts with pickup at your Salzburg hotel and takes the scenic road to Berchtesgaden, via small roads which lead to the village of Ettenberg. There, you will pass through the meadows made famous in the opening scene of „The Sound of Music“.
After a short ride further, you will disembark at the Obersalzberg Eagle's Nest bus terminal where you will board a specially equipped bus. Prepare for a breathtaking 6.4 kilometer trip up the mountain with some of the finest views of the region.
The bus stops at the entrance to a 120-meter long tunnel ending in the original WWII elevator to the Eagle's Nest. Ride the elevator up to the retreat once reserved only for the top members of the Nazi party.
There, an exciting tour awaits as well as some free time to explore the building and have refreshments.
Up next is a tour of the complex bunker system near the town of Berchtesgaden. Constructed in 1943, when Allied bombing had become a reality for Nazi Germany, to protect the staff located in Obersalzberg, it is more a system of tunnels and rooms meant for shelter rather than a defensive position.
Finally, return to the surface for a visit to the picturesque mountain town of Berchtesgaden. Dating back to the 11th century, Berchtesgaden had been a favorite resort destination for royalty in the past such as the Bavarian royal family and the House of Wittelsbach. Enjoy some free time to explore the streets and have lunch in one of the many traditional restaurants before continuing your tour.
Optionally visit the 450-year-old Berchtesgaden salt mine, from which Berchtesgaden dervied its wealth in the past, or take a boat ride on Lake Konigsee to St. Bartholomew's Church, a glacial lake surrounded by Alpine peaks.
Your tour ends with a relaxing ride back to Salzburg along the Konigsee River with drop-off at your hotel.
