About this activity
This is a small-group, outdoor tour tailored especially to explore the Arctic nature while you are hunting for the Northern Lights. The main purpose is to give you the best chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis by traveling away from city light pollution. Position yourselves under cloud free skies to experience the wild Arctic nature. You will be picked up by your local guides in the city center and start the tour by heading towards beautiful mountains, fjords, and valleys.

There will be many stops on the way to take photos of the unique nature (lit by moonlight at the right times of the month) and search for the lights. Where your tour goes depends on the weather conditions, sometimes this is as far as to the Finnish and Swedish border to find the right conditions for the lights. Travel in small groups to create a special, cozy atmosphere. This also makes the tour more flexible.

Expect an unforgettable experience as the arctic nature is pretty unpredictable. You will be provided with insulated overalls, snacks, and hot drinks. Your guide will take photos on the tour and share them with you after the trip. There will also be tripods for your use (under request).

After the tour you be taken directly to your hotel. Welcome and let the chase begin!

We couldn’t see northern lights, but it’s OK. I understand that not all groups can see northern lights. Our guide drove around several spots. At first, it was for chasing northern lights, but when it started to snow in a mountain, he stopped the car just to show us snow falling, and stayed there for more than 30 minutes! Needless to say, the purpose of this tour is to see northern lights, not to see snow. Also, I was from a country where snow is not rare, so what’s interesting about seeing and taking pictures of snow falling? Disappointing tour for me.

When we set off I honestly really didn't expect that we would have any success. Philip managed our expectations and explained the situation and how the auraroa may appear (I understood at best we had a small window) He kept our spirits up during the journey. Mid journey he switched his plan due to weather and we headed to Finland! (try not to forget your passports). During the journey you could tell Philip was dead set in doing his best to track them. The spot he found in Finland had us underneath a massive Aurora white arc. He explained to us what was happening and to be patient when it looked like it was disappearing. He is very knowledgable and so enthusiastic! Well let me tell you the display we were treated to was off the scale of anything l could have ever imagined. Not only that we were lucky enough to be graced by a display that lasted a long time and constantly shifting and changing colours. Oh in all this we had Norwegian soup around a camp fire, hot dogs and toasted marshmallows! Even when we had to depart Philip struggled to tear himself away as the show faded. But he stopped frequently on the way back as the Northern lights made more appearances. Almost all the way back Philip was constantly on the look out even if it was 3am! Spectacular. Amazing. Great host. I gave him a big hug when he dropped us off! I hope you are as lucky as we. lf there is a chance he will find it. Even though he is humble and says he doesn't, I do think Philip has a secret button for the sky!

On clear and cold (naturally) Norwegian night our guide, Petter drove us far from the city lights of Tromsø, all the time explaining local customs, tradition, and especially all the factors that must come together to see the Northern Lights. The space weather predictions were optimistic and we were bundled up for outside viewing. After two hours we saw a couple of green spikes piercing the horizon of a distant snow covered ridge line. Later a wide translucent yellow band arched clear across the sky. Just before 10pm the skies opened and bright shimmering ribbons of Green, pink, and yellow flashed and danced with unpredictable shapes and breathtaking beauty. We gasped and screamed with delight. This lasted at least 30 minutes and we were thrilled to see it one more time just after midnight. The perfect night for a once in a lifetime dream come true. Thank you Petter and Polar Expeditions!Gary Tucker

Our guide (Nikko?) was incredible! Not only did we see the northern lights but we had so much fun driving around and talking with each other around the fire! Our driver and tour guide made the whole experience fun. We even got homemade soup and our tour guide’s favorite hot drink. Would highly recommend this tour!

We started the tour with high hopes: we saw the lights around 11pm through the clouds, but unfortunately the clouds never cleared enough to see them well throughout the night. Our guide and drive drove around for hours trying so hard for us! We stopped and made a fire and roasted hot dogs and told local legends, so that was fun! All in all, this was fun, and since they can’t control the weather, I would give them a 100%!
