Salsa's roots are based on different genres such as Cuban Son and Puerto Rican rhythms. However, as it is also a genre of music, it opens to extemporization, and thus continuously evolving. The modern salsa styles are linked and named to the unique geographic areas from where it evolved. There are often believers of each of these styles outside of their home land.
