Salsa's roots are based on different genres such as Cuban Son and Puerto Rican rhythms. However, as it is also a genre of music, it opens to extemporization, and thus continuously evolving. The modern salsa styles are linked and named to the unique geographic areas from where it evolved. There are often believers of each of these styles outside of their home land. Characteristics that may identify a style includes basic steps, timing, foot patterns, body rolls and movements, attitude, turns and figures, dance influences and the way partners holding each other. The point in a bar music where the break step is taken (the slightly larger step) and the way the step moves can often be used to identify a style.

Incorporating other dance styling practices into salsa has become very common for both men and women including leg work, arm work, spins, body movement, rolls, even hand styling, body isolation, shoulder shimmies, acrobatics and lifts.

Latin American styles originate from Cuba, Puerto Rico and surrounding Caribbean islands including the Dominican Republic. It further expands to Venezuela, Colombia and the other parts of Latin America. Also, there exists the "Miami" style which is a fusion of some Cuban and North American style elements of dancing.
