Day 1: World Heritage Koyasan

Stop At: Koyasan Okunoin, 550 Koyasan, Koya-cho, Ito-gun 648-0211 Wakayama Prefecture
Okunoin (奥の院) is the site of the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism and one of the most revered persons in the religious history of Japan. Instead of having died, Kobo Daishi is believed to rest in eternal meditation as he awaits Miroku Nyorai (Maihreya), the Buddha of the Future, and provides relief to those who ask for salvation in the meantime. Okunoin is one of the most sacred places in Japan and a popular pilgrimage spot.

DANJO GARAN-ON, OR GARAN, WAS ONE OF THE FIRST COMPLEXES BUILT BY KOBO DAISHI IN KOYASAN. VAST, QUIET, SOOTHING, IT IS FILLED WITH TEMPLES, A MAGNIFICENT PAGODA, WITH A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE.

Koyasan is most conveniently accessed by Nankai Railways from Osaka's Namba or Shin-Imamiya Stations. Take the Nankai Koya Line from either station to the Gokurakubashi terminal station. A few limited express trains operate directly to Gokurakubashi (80 minutes, 1650 yen, five trains per day). Otherwise take an express or rapid express train (100 minutes, 870 yen, departs every 20-30 minutes), most of which require a transfer at Hashimoto Station along the way.

Day 2: Kumanokodo Walking

Stop At: Kumano Kodo, Nakahechicho / Hongucho /Nachikatsuuracho, 646-0000

Day 3: Hongutaisha and Nachi falls

Stop At: Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, Hongucho Hongu, Tanabe 647-1731 Wakayama Prefecture
A long stone staircase leads to the sacred grounds of the Kumano Hongu Taisha located on a ridge surrounded by giant cedar and cypress trees. It is one of the Kumano Sanzan, three grand shrines of Kumano, and head shrine of over 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan.

Stop At: Nachi Mitaki Falls, Nachiyama, Nachikatsura-cho, Higashimuro-gun 649-5301 Wakayama Prefecture
Kumano Nachi Taisha (熊野那智大社) is one of the three Kumano shrines, situated a few kilometers inland from the coastal hot spring resort of Katsuura. The shrine is part of a large complex of neighboring religious sites that exemplify the fusion of Buddhist and Shinto influences that is particular to the Kumano region. The site also boasts the tallest waterfall in Japan.

Stop At: Kumano Nachi Taisha, 1 Nachisan, Nachikatsura-cho, Higashimuro-gun 649-5301 Wakayama Prefecture
Kumano Nachi Taisha is a Shinto shrine located halfway up Nachi Mountain, about 350 meters above sea level. It has its religious origin in the ancient nature worship of Nachi-no-Otaki. This grand shrine is part of the Kumano Sanzan and major pilgrimage destination.
